What is Nifty 50?

The Nifty 50 is India's primary stock market index, maintained by NSE Indices Ltd. It represents the top 50 companies by free-float market capitalisation listed on the National Stock Exchange. The index is reviewed semi-annually, with additions and deletions based on market cap, liquidity, and trading frequency criteria.

What is the difference between Nifty 50 and Bank Nifty?

Nifty 50 includes 50 companies across all sectors. Bank Nifty (Nifty Bank) is a sectoral index of the 12 most liquid banking stocks on NSE. Bank Nifty is the most traded derivatives index in the world by volume. Bank Nifty moves more violently than Nifty 50 and is favoured by F&O day traders.

How is Nifty 50 calculated?

Nifty 50 uses free-float market capitalisation methodology — only shares available for public trading are counted. Formula: Index = (Sum of free-float market caps of 50 stocks) / Base market cap × 1,000 (base value set at November 3, 1995). Each stock's weight is capped at a maximum to prevent over-concentration.
