What is FII / FPI?

Foreign Institutional Investors (FIIs), now officially called Foreign Portfolio Investors (FPIs) under SEBI's 2014 regulations, are overseas entities (mutual funds, hedge funds, sovereign wealth funds, pension funds) that invest in Indian equity and debt markets. Their flows significantly influence market direction.

How do FII flows affect the Indian rupee and stock market?

Heavy FII buying increases demand for Indian rupees (they convert foreign currency to INR to buy stocks), strengthening the rupee. FII selling increases dollar demand, weakening the rupee. Rupee depreciation can trigger more FII selling (forex loss concern), creating a vicious cycle during EM selloffs.

NSE publishes provisional FII and DII cash market data daily by 5 PM IST on its website. SEBI also publishes monthly aggregate FPI data. Many financial portals like Moneycontrol and Economic Times display this data in real time.
