Index Fund: Meaning, Definition & Indian Stock Market Examples
Passively managed fund that replicates an index — minimal cost, broad diversification.
What is Index Fund?
An index fund passively tracks a stock market index (like Nifty 50 or Sensex) by holding all or most of the index's constituent stocks in the same proportion. Because no active stock picking is needed, index funds have very low expense ratios (0.05–0.20%) compared to actively managed funds (1–2%).
Index Fund — Indian Stock Market Example
UTI Nifty 50 Index Fund and HDFC Index Fund Nifty 50 Plan are among India's oldest and most popular index funds. Research consistently shows that most active large-cap funds underperform their benchmark Nifty 50 index over 10+ year periods in India — making index funds a compelling default for many investors.

Is an index fund better than an active fund in India?
For large-cap exposure, evidence strongly favours index funds — SEBI data shows over 70–80% of active large-cap funds underperform Nifty 50 over 10 years. For mid-cap and small-cap exposure, some active managers have added alpha, but picking the right one is difficult. A core portfolio of index funds + selective active mid/small-cap funds is a popular approach.
Which index should a new investor track?
Beginners are advised to start with Nifty 50 or Nifty 500 index funds for broad exposure. The Nifty 500 captures 96% of total market cap (large + mid + small cap) and provides better diversification than the pure Nifty 50. For long-term wealth creation (10+ year horizon), both have delivered ~12–14% CAGR historically.
