What is the difference between direct and regular mutual fund plans?
Direct plans: you invest directly with the AMC, no distributor commission, lower expense ratio (0.1–0.5% lower). Regular plans: bought through a distributor or advisor, higher expense ratio (commission paid to intermediary). Over 10–20 years, even 0.3% lower expense ratio in direct plans compounds into significant additional wealth.
How is mutual fund return taxed in India?
Equity mutual funds: STCG (held < 12 months) = 15% tax. LTCG (held > 12 months) = 10% tax on gains above ₹1 lakh per year. Debt mutual funds (from April 2023): taxed as income slab rate regardless of holding period, making them less tax-efficient than before for long-term investors.
