AUM: Meaning, Definition & Indian Stock Market Examples
Assets Under Management — total market value of assets managed by a fund or firm.
What is AUM?
Assets Under Management (AUM) is the total market value of investments managed by a fund manager, AMC, or portfolio manager. For mutual funds, AUM = sum of NAV × units of all schemes. Very large AUM can constrain performance for mid/small-cap funds as they struggle to take meaningful positions in smaller stocks.
AUM — Indian Stock Market Example
India's mutual fund industry AUM crossed ₹50 lakh crore (~$600 billion) by 2024. SBI MF has the highest AUM among Indian AMCs. Small-cap mutual funds closing for fresh subscriptions (like HDFC Small Cap) is a sign that large AUM is affecting their ability to buy small-cap stocks without moving markets.

Does high AUM hurt a fund's performance?
For large-cap funds, high AUM has minimal impact since large-cap stocks are highly liquid. For mid and small-cap funds, however, very high AUM forces the fund manager to either buy fewer stocks at scale (concentration) or hold many stocks (diversification drag). This is why small-cap funds often close for subscriptions when AUM gets too large.
What is AUM-to-GDP ratio and why does it matter?
India's mutual fund AUM-to-GDP ratio is ~15–18%, compared to 80%+ in the US. This low ratio signals significant room for growth as more Indians shift from physical assets (gold, real estate) to financial assets. AMFI and SEBI track this ratio as a measure of market development and financial inclusion.
