What is ETF?

An Exchange-Traded Fund (ETF) is a type of fund that holds a basket of assets (stocks, bonds, gold, commodities) and trades on a stock exchange at real-time market prices, just like a stock. ETFs typically track an index passively, offering diversification at very low cost (expense ratios as low as 0.05–0.10%).

What is the difference between ETF and index fund?

Both track the same index. ETFs trade on exchanges at real-time prices (you can buy/sell any time during market hours). Index funds price once daily at NAV and are bought/sold directly with the AMC. ETFs may trade at a slight premium/discount to NAV; index funds always transact at NAV. For active SIP investors, index funds are simpler; for lump-sum investors, ETFs offer intraday flexibility.
