IPO: Meaning, Definition & Indian Stock Market Examples
Initial Public Offering — a company's first sale of shares to the public.
What is IPO?
An Initial Public Offering (IPO) is when a privately held company first sells shares to the public via a stock exchange. Companies file a Draft Red Herring Prospectus (DRHP) with SEBI, which reviews disclosures before approving the IPO. Investors can apply via ASBA (Application Supported by Blocked Amount) through their bank or broker.
IPO — Indian Stock Market Example
LIC's 2022 IPO was India's largest at ₹21,000 crore. Zomato's 2021 IPO was oversubscribed 38 times. Hyundai India's 2024 IPO was India's largest at ₹27,870 crore. The BSE SME and NSE Emerge platforms enable smaller companies to list, with many SME IPOs getting subscribed 100–500x.

How do I apply for an IPO in India?
Apply through ASBA (Application Supported by Blocked Amount) via internet banking, trading account, or UPI ID. Funds are blocked (not debited) until allotment. Allotment is typically via lottery for oversubscribed IPOs. Retail investors are allocated a separate category (35% of issue). Minimum application is 1 lot (defined by the company).
Is listing gain the best IPO strategy?
Listing gain trading (GMP-based speculation) is extremely popular in India but carries high risk — not all IPOs list at premium. A sounder strategy is evaluating the fundamentals: business quality, valuation relative to peers, promoter credibility, use of IPO proceeds, and whether the business is actually profitable. Many high-subscription IPOs have been poor long-term investments.
