What is Market Capitalisation?

Market Capitalisation (Market Cap) is the total market value of all outstanding shares of a company, calculated as Share Price × Total Shares Outstanding. It determines whether a stock is classified as Large Cap, Mid Cap, or Small Cap by SEBI and mutual fund categories.

Market Capitalisation — Indian Stock Market Example

Reliance Industries has the largest market cap on NSE, often above ₹15–20 lakh crore. SEBI defines Large Cap as the top 100 companies by market cap, Mid Cap as ranks 101–250, and Small Cap as 251 and below. The Nifty 50 index tracks the 50 largest companies by free-float market cap.

Frequently Asked Questions about Market Capitalisation

What is the difference between market cap and enterprise value?

Market cap only values the equity portion (shares). Enterprise Value (EV) adds net debt to market cap, giving the total value of the business including what would be owed to lenders. EV is more relevant for acquisitions and comparing capital structures.

What are SEBI's market cap category thresholds?

SEBI ranks all listed companies by market cap and defines: Large Cap = top 100 companies, Mid Cap = ranks 101–250, Small Cap = rank 251 onwards. This list is revised semi-annually by AMFI and affects mutual fund category classifications.
