Alpha: Meaning, Definition & Indian Stock Market Examples
Returns generated above and beyond the market benchmark — the value added by active management.
What is Alpha?
Alpha measures the excess return of an investment relative to the return predicted by its beta (market exposure). A fund generating 5% return when the Nifty 50 returned 12% has negative alpha. A fund generating 18% when Nifty returned 12% has positive alpha of 6%. Alpha is the holy grail of active fund management.
Alpha — Indian Stock Market Example
India's best active mid-cap funds (like Nippon India Small Cap or HDFC Mid-Cap Opportunities) have generated consistent positive alpha of 3–8% over their benchmarks. Most large-cap active funds show zero or negative alpha over 10-year periods — reinforcing the case for index funds in the large-cap segment.

How is alpha different from absolute returns?
Absolute return is simply how much your investment grew. Alpha is the portion attributable to skill rather than market beta. A fund returning 15% during a year when Nifty rose 20% has positive absolute return but negative alpha — it underperformed despite making money. Alpha separates skill from luck and market tailwinds.
Can I generate alpha as a retail investor in India?
Yes, but it is difficult and requires research discipline. Stock-specific alpha opportunities exist in mid-cap and small-cap segments where institutional coverage is lower, information is less efficiently priced, and patient research can identify undervalued companies before the market does. In large-caps, consistently generating alpha is statistically very difficult.
