Short Selling: Meaning, Definition & Indian Stock Market Examples
Selling borrowed shares expecting price to fall — profit from price decline.
What is Short Selling?
Short selling involves borrowing shares and selling them in the market, expecting the price to fall. The short seller buys back shares later at a lower price, returns them to the lender, and pockets the difference. In India, intraday short selling in the cash market and short F&O positions are the most common forms.
Short Selling — Indian Stock Market Example
Hindenburg Research's short report on Adani Group in 2023 caused a 50%+ crash in Adani stocks — the report monetised a large short position. In Indian equity markets, intraday short selling is allowed in cash market. Overnight short positions in stocks require borrowing via Securities Lending & Borrowing (SLB).

Can retail investors short sell stocks in India?
For intraday: yes, retail investors can take short positions in the cash market and must square off before 3:20 PM. Overnight short positions require using the F&O market (shorting futures or buying put options) or the SLB (Securities Lending & Borrowing) platform, which has low liquidity for retail investors.
What is a short squeeze?
A short squeeze occurs when a heavily shorted stock rises sharply, forcing short sellers to buy back shares to limit losses. Their buying further pushes the price up, triggering more forced buying. India witnessed short squeezes in PSU stocks (2023) and small-cap stocks after positive policy announcements, wiping out overleveraged short positions.
