What is Resistance Level?

A resistance level is a price zone where selling pressure has historically been strong enough to stop or reverse an uptrend. As price approaches resistance, sellers increase supply, preventing further advance. When resistance is broken convincingly, it typically becomes the new support.

Resistance Level — Indian Stock Market Example

Nifty 50's all-time high repeatedly acted as resistance before being broken in 2023 and 2024 bull runs. Stocks that gap down on negative news often find resistance at the gap area. Bank Nifty frequently encounters resistance at major psychological levels like 44,000 or 46,000.

Frequently Asked Questions about Resistance Level

How do I identify key resistance levels?

Look for: (1) Price reversals — past peaks where price previously turned down; (2) High-volume rejection candles — long upper wicks at specific prices; (3) Round numbers (₹1000, ₹500, etc.); (4) Moving averages (50-day or 200-day acting as overhead resistance); (5) Previous support that was broken (now flipped to resistance).

What is a "false breakout" above resistance?

A false breakout (or "bull trap") occurs when price briefly moves above resistance before reversing sharply. This traps buyers who entered on the breakout. Common on low volume. Experienced traders wait for a candle close above resistance on above-average volume before treating it as a genuine breakout.
