What is Share Pledge?

Share pledging occurs when promoters use their shareholding as collateral to borrow money from banks or NBFCs. While pledging itself is not illegal, high pledge levels are a risk indicator — if the stock falls, lenders can sell pledged shares, accelerating the decline (a pledge cascade).
