What is Market Order?

A market order instructs the broker to execute a trade immediately at the best currently available price, regardless of what that price is. Market orders guarantee execution but not price — in volatile or illiquid markets, the execution price can differ significantly from the expected price (slippage).

Market Order — Indian Stock Market Example

Placing a market order to buy Bank Nifty options during high volatility can result in execution 50–100 points away from the last traded price. For Nifty 50 ETFs or large-cap stocks, market orders typically execute within 1–2 paise of the expected price due to high liquidity. During circuit triggers or halt reopenings, market orders face extreme slippage.

Frequently Asked Questions about Market Order

When should I use a market order vs limit order?

Use market orders for: highly liquid stocks/ETFs (large-caps, Nifty ETFs) where you want guaranteed execution. Use limit orders for: illiquid stocks, options (always), or any situation where price matters more than speed. For F&O, always use limit orders — market orders in options can result in terrible fills.

What is order slippage?

Slippage is the difference between the price you expected and the price you actually received. Market orders on illiquid stocks suffer heavy slippage because your order moves through multiple price levels to fill. Slippage is a real cost — high-frequency slippage significantly erodes trading profits for active traders.
