What is Bollinger Bands?

Bollinger Bands consist of a middle band (20-period SMA) and two outer bands at ±2 standard deviations. When bands are wide, volatility is high; when narrow ("Bollinger Squeeze"), a large price move is typically imminent. Price touching the upper band suggests overbought; touching the lower band suggests oversold.

Bollinger Bands — Indian Stock Market Example

Bollinger Band squeezes on Nifty weekly charts have preceded major breakouts — both the 2020 recovery rally and the 2022 correction were preceded by band compression. Indian mid-cap stocks often show powerful breakouts after multi-month band squeezes, a setup popular with momentum traders.

Frequently Asked Questions about Bollinger Bands

What is the Bollinger Band Squeeze?

A squeeze occurs when the bands contract to their narrowest point, indicating a period of low volatility. Statistically, low volatility is followed by high volatility — so a squeeze signals a major move is coming. Traders use the direction of the eventual breakout to determine trade direction.

Can price walk along a Bollinger Band?

Yes. In strong trends, price can "walk the upper band" — staying near the upper band for extended periods. This is a sign of strong bullish momentum, not a sell signal. Only when price reverses back inside the bands does it signal trend weakness. This is a common mistake for new traders.
